One of my favorite food spots during our trip to Italy was Bologna, hands-down.
If "Bologna" sounds at all familiar to you, "bolognese" may ring a bell.

Not only is Bologna famous for it's ragu meat sauce, it also graced us with mortadella and tortellini.
Oh, and it's also home to the oldest university in the western world, built in 1088.

The city itself merges modernized food and fashion culture with medieval architecture,
making it an obvious favorite of mine.

Clothing boutiques of emerging and established artists lined the main city streets surrounding medieval castles and cathedrals.

As you walked under the porticos through the narrow alleyways branching off of those streets, you were hit with the aroma of a variety of italian delicacies.

In the alleyways you'll find an abundance of fresh food markets, pizzerias, bakeries, pasta shops, cheese shops and delis housing a large selection of cured meats.

Next week: VENICE.
